Tokyo International Film Festival - Tokyo, Japan

The Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF) which was established in 1985,It is one of Asia’s competitive film festivals and the second largest film festival in Asia behind the Shanghai International Film Festival
The Tokyo International Film Festival is the only Japanese film festival accredited by the International Federation of Film Producers Association (FIAPF).
The event is held annually in October and awards are handed out during the festival. The Tokyo Grand Prix award which is the top award amongst other awards is handed to the best film; other awards that have been given regularly include the Special Jury Award, awards for best actor, best actress and best director.
The 37th Tokyo International Film festival as stated on the official website www.tiff-jp.net is slated to hold on the 28th of October 2024 and to end on the 6th of November 2024.

Shanghai International Film Festival – Shanghai, China

The Shanghai International Film Festival was established in October 1993.It is Asia’s largest film festival, the longest running International cinema event and also the only Chinese festival accredited by the International Federation of Film Producers Association (FIAPF).
This festival is organised by the China Film Administration, the China Media Group and the Shanghai Government, and is held in the month of June annually.

The Glastonbury Festival – England, United Kingdom

The Glastonbury Festival is a five-day festival held annually in the month of June; it was formerly known as Glastonbury Festival of Contemporary Performing Arts and was established on the 19th of September 1970. The festival features dance, theatre, comedy, circus, cabaret and other arts in addition to the contemporary music; films and albums have been known to be recorded during the festival.

Carnival of Venice – Venice, Italy

The Carnival of Venice has been in existence since the Middle Ages till it was abolished in 1797 but was revived in 1979. Held annually, this carnival which involves activities such as masquerade balls, street performances, concerts, candle-lit parade of boats and historic re-enactments is held for two weeks before the Ash Wednesday which marks the beginning of the Lenten Season. The Carnival brings about social equalization as the identities of people from  various social stratification are concealed to preserve anonymity as it involves the use of masks and costumes. www.carnevale.venezia.it

The Boryeong Mud Festival – Boryeong, South Korea

The Boryeong Mud Festival is an annual summer festival held in Boryeong a coastal city located in Seoul, South Korea. It was first staged in 1997 as a marketing strategy to promote a range of cosmetics which were produced using mineral-rich mud from the Boryeong mud flats; it was hoped that through this festival people would learn about the mud and the cosmetics produced. This eventually became Korea’s most popular summer festival and is held in the month of July for a period of two weeks, starting on the second and third Friday of the month. www.boryeongmudfestival.com

La Tomatina – Buñol, Spain

La Tomatina is a Spanish friendly food fight festival that involves participants throwing tomatoes at each other. The festivals origin can be traced back to the last Wednesday of August in the year 1945 when participants of a parade flew into a fit of rage and began hitting everything on their path using tomatoes from a nearby market stall of vegetables to pelt each other. Since the inception of the festival, it has been held annually on the last Wednesday in the month of August; although it was cancelled in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. www.latomatina.info

Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta – Albuquerque, Mexico

Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta is a nine-day hot air balloon festival that takes place in Albuquerque, New Mexico during the first week of October. AfrikaBurn – Tankwa Karoo, South Africa

The AfrikaBurn is an annual event which takes place in the month of April in Tankwa Karoo, located between the Northern Cape and Western Cape Provinces of South Africa. It is a Burning Man-inspired festival where participants create art, costumes, music and fire. www.afrikaburn.org

Splashy Fen – Underberg, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa

The Splashy Fen festival was established in 1990 and it is the longest-running music festival in South Africa. It is held annually for four days during the Easter weekend, the festival features music performances by local and international artists, arts and crafts stalls, food and drinks outlets, children’s entertainment program and various camping and accommodation options. https://splashyfen.co.za

Boomtown Festival¬ – Hampshire, United Kingdom

The Boomtown Festival also known The Boomtown Fair, is a British music festival held annually in South Downs National Park near Winchester, Hampshire in the United Kingdom. Calgary Stampede – Alberta, Canada

The Calgary Stampede is an annual rodeo exhibition and festival held every July in Calgary, Alberta in Canada. It is a ten – day which bills itself as the greatest outdoor show on earth. The festival features one of the largest rodeo, a parade ,stage shows, concerts, agricultural competitions, chuckwagon racing and First Nations exhibitions. www.calgarystampede.com

Fuji Rock Festival - Japan

The Fuji Rock Festival is a three – day rock festival held annually in July at the Naeba Ski Resort, Niigata Prefecture, in  Japan. It features over 200 Japanese and international musicians, the night before the festival  there is an open party which is a free entry, that includes bon – odori ( a traditional Japanese folk dance ), prize draws, food stalls and fireworks display. https://en.fujirockfestival.com 

The Aloha Festival – Hawaii, U.S.A

The Aloha Festival is an annual series of free cultural celebrations observed in the state of Hawaii in the United States. It is the only state wide cultural festival in the nation. The Japanese Festival of Houston – Houston, Texas

The Lagos Games Festival – Lagos, Nigeria

The Lagos games festival is an annual one-day games and arts festival that takes place in Lagos, Nigeria and is usually held during the Easter celebration. This festival was created with the sole aim of promoting gaming culture, as well as building business opportunities for the gaming industry. The Burning Man – Nevada, USA

The burning man is a week-long large-scale desert event focused on community, art, self-expression and self-reliance held annually in the United States. Cannes Film Festival – Cannes, France

The Cannes Film Festival is an annual film festival held in Cannes, France which showcases new films of all genres including documentaries, from around the world.
